A slice of Paradise

Wealthy British businessman Jared Chesterfield and his wife, Maureen Gleeson, leave London behind for what should be a peaceful final chapter at their spectacular clifftop villa in Antibes. Age and illness are beginning to catch up with them, and despite Maureen’s objections, Jared hires two live-in nurses to care for them: Sidharth “Sid” Singh, an exceptionally intelligent former Cambridge medical student whose promising life was derailed by personal tragedy, and Margret Cross, a resilient but financially desperate nurse carrying troubles of her own.

Fractured Legacies

Behind the beauty of the Côte d’Azur, the Chesterfields are already a family at war. Jared’s children — Matthew, Ingrid and Claire — believe Maureen destroyed their parents’ marriage, replacing their late mother and manoeuvring herself into control of the family fortune. With Jared considering how his vast estate should eventually be divided, years of resentment explode into open hostility.

The Underground Fortune

But there is another secret inside the villa. Shortly after Jared and Maureen arrive, private bankers discreetly deliver ten locked cases containing millions in mixed currencies. The money disappears into a secure cave-like basement beneath the house. Almost nobody knows it is there.

Margret, meanwhile, is fighting a far more immediate battle. Her vulnerable nine-year-old stepsister, Daisy, lives in London under the guardianship of their uncle, Tate Goodridge, a manipulative predator Margret believes has been sexually abusing her for years. Every attempt to expose Tate has failed. He understands the system, maintains the appearance of a responsible guardian and has successfully portrayed Margret — who has attacked him twice in the past — as unstable and vindictive.

When Margret learns Daisy may again be in danger, she desperately searches for money and somewhere safe to take her. Friends refuse to help. A former benefactor turns her away. Her legal options collapse around her.

Then temptation arrives. Left alone at the Antibes villa, Margret discovers the key to the Chesterfields’ basement and tries unsuccessfully to open their locked suitcases. She is caught by Sid. Instead of stopping her, Sid calmly walks to one of the cases, enters the combination and opens it. Inside are bundles of cash. Sid reveals that he has secretly deciphered every combination Jared uses. Hidden beneath the villa is approximately three million pounds in multiple currencies. Even more disturbing, Sid knows almost everything about Margret’s situation. He has overheard her desperate phone calls, knows about Daisy and understands exactly why Margret needs money. “As far as Daisy is concerned,” he tells her, “I’m your only hope.” Margret initially refuses to steal a single note. But Sid has recognised something she has not: desperation has already brought her to the edge, and eventually circumstances will push her across it. While Jared trusts Sid more deeply — even placing him in control of an offshore account used to pay the nurses’ salaries and the Chesterfields’ medical expenses — Sid quietly studies the family’s finances, investment accounts and routines. Beneath his charm and professionalism emerges a man who watches everything, remembers everything and is always several moves ahead.

With Daisy’s situation becoming unbearable, Margret finally agrees to act. Sid warns her that stolen cash alone will never solve the problem. If Daisy is to live safely in France, Margret will need legitimate funds for rent, utilities, food and medical care. Sid therefore begins constructing a way of moving money without immediately exposing its source. Their first theft is carefully controlled. Margret secretly sedates Maureen through her intravenous nutrition, removes the basement keys from her handbag and gives them to Sid. Under cover of darkness, Sid enters the cave, opens the hidden cases and removes only the agreed amount, leaving everything else precisely as he found it.

Escape from Britain

Season1Episode6-img3.jpg

In London, Margret makes her move. With the help of Daisy’s neighbour Ayesha and a local handyman, Nick, she breaks into Tate’s locked flat, frees Daisy, retrieves her passport and escapes Britain with her. Hours later, Margret and Daisy are flying towards France. For the first time, Daisy appears free. Sid has already arranged an apartment for them in Antibes. But freedom brings another crisis. Daisy suddenly begins losing her sight. Doctors diagnose a detached retina requiring immediate surgery in Monaco. Without an urgent operation, she could be permanently blind.

Margret needs more money. Once again, Sid turns to the cave. This time, everything goes wrong. As Sid removes bundles of euros, Jared catches him in the act. The betrayal devastates Jared. He had trusted Sid completely, admired his intelligence and welcomed him into his life. Now he finds his nurse standing beside his hidden fortune with Maureen’s stolen key. “You can explain everything to the police, you snake.” Jared tries to leave. Sid stops him. During the struggle, Sid injects Jared with a powerful sedative. Jared collapses on the stone staircase.

Detonation of a Family

Jared Chesterfield’s body is recovered the following evening. His death detonates the already fractured family. At Jared’s funeral, grief becomes accusation. Matthew publicly turns on Maureen, suggesting she murdered his father for the inheritance. Meanwhile, Margret forces Sid to tell her what really happened in the cove and is horrified to realise that the theft she joined has escalated into murder. Daisy, recovering from successful eye surgery, senses that something is wrong. When Margret tells her Sid will be staying with them, the frightened child admits simply: “I’m scared.”

Sid now faces an even greater threat. Maureen does not believe his story. She confronts him over one fundamental question: why would Jared, an elderly man in declining health, suddenly decide to swim in the Mediterranean at midnight? Sid responds with another carefully constructed narrative. He claims Jared had become depressed by the war with his children, tormented by guilt over abandoning his first wife, and increasingly unable to live with the consequences of his past. Maureen listens. But she knows her husband. And she does not believe him. Unable to dismiss her suspicions, Maureen takes them to Louis Mercier of the French Gendarmerie, pointing out that Jared had once been a competitive swimmer and questioning Sid’s account of his final hours.

A Crime Scene in Waiting

The medical evidence offers no easy answer. Jared’s prolonged immersion in seawater has compromised toxicology, making it difficult to establish whether drugs were present in his body. Then Louis delivers another shock. Jared’s children have already approached the authorities. They believe Maureen murdered their father. To them, she possesses the motive, the opportunity and potentially everything to gain. By the end of Season One, the paradise Jared and Maureen came to Antibes to enjoy has become a crime scene in waiting. Margret is bound to Sid by theft, deception and the knowledge of murder. Daisy has escaped one predator only to find herself living beside a man capable of killing to protect his secrets. Maureen is beginning to suspect the truth, while Jared’s children are directing the police towards the wrong killer. And at the centre of it all stands Sid — outwardly calm, brilliant and indispensable — having crossed the line from caregiver to thief to murderer. The question is no longer whether Jared Chesterfield’s death will be investigated. It is who will fall when the truth begins to surface.
